Dr. Jakob August Lorent (Charleston, SC, USA 1813-1884 Merano) was one of the earliest travel and architecture photographers. He was one of the first ever to travel with a camera to many Mediterranean countries. Lorent took his journeys in a time when even just getting around and finding accommodation in these countries was an adventure, making it all the more significant that he also brought highly interesting photographs home from these arduous journeys.

Observe with a Soft Voice – Philosopher Gaston Bachelard once called himself a „dreamer of words, a dreamer of written words.“ Amira Fritz, on the contrary, is a dreamer of images, floating atmospheres, harmonic landscapes, gentle flowers, faces and people who investigate the observer as if they emerged from an unreachable, enchanted otherworld. Her photographs (just like Bachelard’s words) detach themselves from the heavy burden that binds them to time and reality and instead open up to the dream, to emotions, to a poetic geography where travelling is the ability of encountering without revealing.

Max Pinckers and Daisuke Yokota are both interested in the surfaces of photography, and the limitations the two-dimensional image has in shaping our understanding of the world; make a two-dimensional image and you get a two- dimensional understanding.

Kondratyev is a young Kyrgyzstani-American photographer, who spent the period between November 2014 and June 2015 travelling on Fabrica’s assignment in Central Asia and produced a visual itinerary of these barely known and distant places. The result is Formations, the most recent photo book produced by Fabrica.

As the title suggests, the aim of this exhibition is not merely to present different approaches and practices within documentary photography related to war, but also to reflect on the intrinsic conflict that image making involves, particularly when coupled with the depiction of suffering and pain.

Caviezel’s archive today contains more than three million photographs covering all aspects of life. In ‘The Encyclopedia of Kurt Caviezel,’ all series that emerged during those years are put into alphabetical order.

The exhibition at the foto-forum in Bolzano shows some selected photographs from “Anderswo” [“Elsewhere”], a book of photographs that was recently published. The film Der Fotograf vor der Kamera [“The Photographer in Front of the Camera”] by Tizza Covi and Rainer Frimmel documents Erich Lessing’s process of selecting images for just this book project.

Using historical photographic documents that were discovered in the 1980s in Genoa by the collector Riccardo Sezzi, this exhibition is directed at specialists, researchers and lovers of the forensic sciences, police investigations and crime scenes.

For about five years, I have been documenting the housing problems of the city of Rome in my photographic work; this has led me to explore the fringe zones and hidden places within the city’s urbanised territory ever more extensively.
