With Gaëlle Rouard // Grenoble – FR

Festival Analogica 15, Foto Forum, Bolzano/Bozen (Italy), 2025

ANALOGICA 15 presents a workshop with Gaelle Rouart, built around the central elements of her artistic practice as a guiding thread. In this two-day intensive workshop, participants will be introduced to the purest form of cinema through its fundamental elements — movement and light. Beyond narrative conventions, film will be explored as an immediate and sensory experience. The starting point is the loop: small 16mm fragments become repeated sequences that open up infinite worlds of rhythms, pulsations, and visual impressions. Repetition turns into rhythm; the simplest gestures acquire a hypnotic, almost musical quality.

At the heart of the workshop is the flat-print technique — a direct contact printing process from film to film without corrections or filters. Raw, neutral, and transparent, it reveals every detail and imperfection of the source material, making visible how the interplay of light, movement, and chemistry alone brings the moving image to life. Without cameras or measuring instruments — only film stock, light, chemistry, and imagination — participants will experience cinema in its most radical form.

The workshop will use black-and-white material; all participants will receive a digitized copy of the resulting works in December.

GAËLLE ROUARD is a filmmaker, alchemist and performance artist. Since the early 1990s, Rouard has been making handmade films, specialising in film processing. She is a longtime member of Le 102, rue d’Alembert, a venue dedicated to diffusion and creation of experimental music and film. Rouard also facilitates workshops in different contexts, from art schools to individual teaching. She develops and explores various methods of chemical processing of film. With performances around the world, she experiments with the possibilities of live multi-projection, both in collaboration with various people and in solo acts. Rouard led the do-it-yourself film lab Atelier MTK in Grenoble for 12 years, until 2006.
