Workshop: Words Evoke Images, Images Evoke Words by Nicole Fersko, Foto Forum Festival Bolzano/Bozen, 2026
The everyday feels, looks, tastes, smells, and sounds different to each of us. Diaristic writing, photography, and film are ways of recording what we see, feel, and perceive, and of expressing a personal vision through what we choose to reveal or omit.
This workshop explores the relationship between text and image through a diaristic approach, drawing on the work of writers and artists such as Maggie Nelson, Anne Carson, Kate Zambreno, Teju Cole, Moyra Davey, Sophie Calle, Duane Michals, and Nan Goldin.
Through readings, discussions, and diary-based writing exercises, we will work with the raw material of our lives, exploring how words and images intertwine, coexist, and respond to one another. The workshop is open to anyone—whether already working on a project or just beginning.
There will be an evening open mic organized by Sidewalk Bolzano and Zelig with a particular focus on image + text readings or screenings.
The workshop takes inspiration from Words Evoke Images, Images Evoke Words, a photographic diaristic project developed by Nicole Fersko in March 2020, based on a process of immediacy where writing and image-making continuously evoke one another.
Nicole Fersko is a writing facilitator and memoir writer whose practice engages with diary writing and analogue photography. She holds a Master’s degree in Creative Writing and Education from Goldsmiths, University of London. She developed a passion for darkroom photography through classes at the International Center of Photography (ICP). Through her own writing practice and pedagogical research, she has facilitated a variety of creative writing workshops in institutions and cultural spaces in London, Trento, and Bolzano. She currently works as an art mediator at Museion, where she co-created Museion Ink, a programme that engages with art through creative writing.
